Stone Island jacket: how can you spot a counterfeit?
Founded in 1982, Italian brand Stone Island is renowned for its innovative approach to fashion and the quality of the materials used to create its garments. Recently acquired by Moncler, the brand enjoys a solid reputation associated with the world of sport, luxury and music. However, given its success, the brand is prone to counterfeiting. Many counterfeiters are constantly replicating Stone Island's best-known garments. Among them is the brand's jacket. That's why, if you want to buy your Stone Island jacket second-hand or off the rack, we've provided some tips on how to spot the difference between a fake Stone Island jacket and a real one.
The price :
Price is the first indicator to analyse when you're looking to buy a genuine second-hand Stone Island jacket. The brand justifies its prices by the materials and techniques used in the manufacture of its products.
You are paying for the quality of the product. So, if you are offered a Stone Island item for significantly less than the original purchase price of the item, start to distrust the authenticity of the product.
The badge :
Pay particular attention to the brand badge on the side of the jacket. It says a lot about the authenticity of the garment. The most commonly used badge is the green and yellow compass on a black background with a black border. The colour may vary, but the design remains the same.
If the jacket you wish to buy has the standard yellow/green badge, the yellow of the compass should be a deep golden yellow. It's not uncommon for replicas to be too bright. The brand inscription on the badge should be a deep blue/green.
Genuine Stone Island badges have a suspension stitch in the centre of the outer edge of both buttonholes, the stitch falling away and appearing as a small yellow dot on the edge of the badge. On counterfeit badges, this suspension point is not present.
Also look at the back of the badge. On this side, you should find a white seam between the yellow and green of the compass. Badges designed by replica factories often have a different colour.
The zip :
Now let's check the zip on your Stone Island jacket. The Italian brand uses top-quality zips, Lampo on older models and YKK on more recent garments.
If your jacket doesn't have a Lampo or YKK zip, you may have doubts about the authenticity of your garment. You can tell by the engraving on the zip pull.
The buttons :
Also check the buttons on your Stone Island jacket. These are also a clue as to whether or not the garment is authentic. Stone Island buttons should be engraved with the words 'Stone' and 'Island' around the circumference of the button face.
All the brand's buttons should have a cross in the middle that forms the stitching holes, instead of the four circular holes you'll often find on counterfeits.

The safety label :
The final point you need to analyse concerns the security label on the inside of the jacket. For some years now, the Italian brand has been using Certilogo to verify the identity of original garments.
Each jacket has a unique 12-digit code and a QR code. You can then enter it on the Certilogo portal or scan the QR code to confirm the authenticity of the garment. Be careful, though, as some counterfeiters go so far as to use codes that actually exist.
