Lacoste jumper: How can you spot a counterfeit?
For years, Lacoste has been making a name for itself with its famous sports-inspired pieces that can be worn for any occasion. These models ensure a modern and fashionable look. Lacoste aims to combine style and freedom of movement with a touch of the French touch that remains desirable. Its iconic piece? The polo shirt made from pure cotton. But the brand has not forgotten the elegance that a Lacoste jumper can bring. That's why it decided to launch its collection of jumpers featuring the classic little embroidered crocodile. These various models were a great success, but this did not escape counterfeiters. These counterfeiters are constantly reproducing Lacoste jumpers.
Unfortunately, if you're not a connoisseur, you can easily be fooled by the tempting offers of the brand's copied products. In this article, we reveal some effective tips that will help you identify a genuine Lacoste jumper and differentiate it from a counterfeit product.
The collar label
First, check the label on the collar. You should find a label with the words 'LACOSTE' just below the brand's emblematic crocodile. Lacoste products are made in France, where sizes are indicated in figures. Just above the crocodile, you should see a 1, 2, 3 or 4. If you can identify 'medium', 'large' or 'small' on the label, you're probably looking at a counterfeit.
The washing label
Also check the washing label on the inside of the jumper. It should be at the bottom of the sweater, so you can spot any fakes. A genuine label should include the following information:
- Washing instructions with the words "Devanlay" on the back
- "100% cotton" printed in 7 languages
The imitations feature the same instructions as on the front of the label. They are crudely sewn and the letters are often hidden.
The chest logo
Look at the logo on the jumper, which is a key factor in spotting a counterfeit. The crocodile representing the brand logo should be dark green with visible teeth and claws. The upper jaw is shorter than the lower and points upwards. The tail remains curved and points in the same direction as the jaw. The eye should resemble a slit rather than a circle. A counterfeit crocodile looks more like a caricature with many imperfections and less detail. Make sure that the outline is smooth and not irregular, as counterfeits never have the same level of detail as an authentic logo. On an imitation, the crocodile may be toothless, clawless or a different colour. These details can be bigger, thicker or simply non-existent. The logo on a Lacoste imitation is very often simply glued on and not embroidered.
Here's a counterfeit logo on the left and a genuine one on the right.
Seams
Seams should be straight, clean and neat. Lacoste jumpers are known for their durability and quality. The seams should therefore be well sewn and parallel. An imitation can quickly be identified by the protruding threads and curling seams.
