Advice and tips on buying and selling between private individuals

How can you spot a fake Burberry trench coat?

The end of winter heralds the start of spring on 20 March. The Burberry trench coat is the ideal mid-season overcoat. It can be worn particularly well in spring, but just as well into autumn. However, due to its huge popularity, the tartan pattern of this famous British luxury brand is extremely imitated and counterfeited.

Here are 4 checkpoints for recognising a fake Burberry trench coat.

1. The labels

Inside the coat, along the neckline, are labels. The largest label is a rectangular label sewn into the coat that shows the Burberry logo in large print and, on some models, a knight on horse symbol always facing to the left. Both elements of this symbol are clearly identifiable on real Burberry trench coats.

On the left, a real Burberry trench coat, on the right a fake Burberry trench coat.

Then there are two other small labels, one showing where the coat was made, and the other the size of the item. Please note that Burberry makes its clothes all over the world, so the place of manufacture on the label may be different to other items from the luxury brand. However, if one of these three labels is missing, you are in possession of a fake Burberry coat.

So be sure to pay close attention to the details on these labels. The Heritage trench coat from Burberry is a quality piece with no flaws. All the letters of the same word are the same size and centred in the middle of the label. If there is a mistake, an irregularity of any kind, lower case letters on the largest label for example, beware, it is surely a Burberry counterfeit.

2. Burberry buttons

With luxury products such as Burberry trench coats, every detail counts. The price of these items is justified by their impeccable quality. On a Heritage Burberry trench coat, the buttons bear the brand name twice. It is written in circular form, top and bottom, around the button of the coat. They are all written in the same font and in capital letters. If the buttons are blank, it's probably a copy of the Burberry coat.

3. Patterns and colours

The tartan adopted by Burberry, with its white, black, red and beige tartan checks and yarns, is the DNA of the British luxury brand. This pattern is tucked into the lining or is the outer motif of most Burberry coats. To check the authenticity of your Burberry trench coat, look closely at the colours and the layout of the tartan threads. Everything is perfectly symmetrical and this precision is rarely well imitated. If there are different colours or asymmetrical lines, it's a fake Burberry coat.

4. The fabric

I repeat, Burberry coats are made from high quality materials. Run your hand over the coat to see if the quality is good or not. If the quality isn't soft enough, it's a copy of a Burberry trench coat.
