Advice and tips on buying and selling between private individuals

Second-hand clothes between individuals: optimise your ads!

There's no shortage of second-hand clothes on Facebook, Leboncoin, Ebay etc... To help you stand out from the crowd and increase your chances of sales, here are a few tips to help you stand out from the crowd.

Quality photos to whet the appetite

It's vital to highlight the item you're selling. Choose a plain, sober background to make your item stand out. Take a photo of the item being worn (ideally by you, not one you've found on the internet), another of the item on a hanger and, if the garment has patterns, a final close-up photo. Take your inspiration from well-known sales sites such as La Redoute.

To stand out from the crowd, you need to make people dream!

Don't be afraid to be exhaustive and transparent

Give as much information as possible about the item: size, colour(s), brand and collection (season and year). Also tell your customer about the history of the item, its actual condition, and how the garment falls when worn (if you're a size 8 but the item is a bit baggy and you could have taken a size 9, don't be shy!)

Get your title right

In the midst of these hundreds of adverts, it is important that potential buyers know from the title what they are dealing with. The title should include the name of the item, the brand, its size and its general condition. There's no point in adding "URGENT!" or "SUPER DEAL", as this probably won't change anything: there's nothing to stop the buyer potentially comparing prices. And besides...

Sell at the right price

It can be tempting to minimise losses by selling at full price. A big mistake. Unless it's an exceptional piece, other people are selling or have already sold an item similar to yours. Take the time to look for items similar to yours, and choose a price in line with market averages. You can go to the following link (by ticking the "completed sales" box) to see the prices at which items similar to yours have been sold.

Take care with your text

To stand out from the crowd, you need to make potential buyers feel as if they're talking to a professional! Make it a point of honour not to make any mistakes, to take care with syntax and to be clear, without being too long.
