Leboncoin scam: a business victim of identity theft
Leboncoin is the first site to enable transactions between private individuals through classified ads. However, as a site dedicated to private individuals, it is less regulated than a traditional site. This opens the door to many scams.
A few days ago, at least seven people fell victim to a scam on the famous classified ads site. They ordered and paid for products that they never received.
A well-crafted scam
Seven people ordered and paid for products on the same website via Leboncoin. However, once they had placed their order, the same thing happened to each of them: they had no further news from their seller, a household appliance company. One of them went to the company's head office to claim what was owed to him.
The company is also one of the victims
It was when this customer turned up that the company's real manager realised that she and her company were victims of identity theft. In the days that followed, the manager received further calls from frustrated customers. In all, seven people contacted the manager, demanding goods worth between €1,000 and €1,800.
An investigation has been launched
After doing more research, the real manager of the victim company realised that her scammers had gone very far. They had created a website using her company's identity, as well as a Facebook page. She then quickly contacted her local gendarmerie to lodge a complaint.
