Advice and tips on buying and selling between private individuals

A few tips before buying or selling a second-hand console

Whether you want to spend long days exploring different worlds or add a touch of fun to evenings out with friends, buying a games console is a sound investment. But these machines are expensive, and going to the second-hand market is often a good way of getting more for less: accessories, games, the purchase is all the more worthwhile.

However, there are a number of things you should check before taking the plunge. If you are a seller, this will allow you to buy a new console, or simply invest your money elsewhere. A games console retains its value for a relatively long time, as new versions are not released every four mornings.

The various points raised in the next few lines are also aimed at the seller: if certain shortcomings are identified, discuss them with the buyer and, above all, adjust your selling price accordingly!

1 - Insist on hand delivery for essential checks

Firstly, it is essential that you hand over the machine yourself when you buy it, so that you can check in detail the condition of the machine and its connections. The casing must be impeccable, as even the slightest impact could mean that the machine has fallen, resulting in internal damage that is invisible from the outside. A simple way to get an idea of any internal damage is to gently tilt the console back and forth a few times to hear if any parts are bouncing around.

It's also a good idea to check the general condition of the various ports (both on the console and on the controllers) to avoid any nasty surprises. As far as controllers and potential external peripherals are concerned, don't forget to test the joysticks and buttons to make sure they're in good condition.

Also check that all the cables are present: audio/video output, machine power supply, controller power supply cables if applicable... be meticulous!

Always ask to see it in working order

2 - Check that the console is functional and has not been modified

Today's consoles are real computers and can therefore be pirated. If possible, make sure that they are not modified (you can simply ask the seller if this is the case), as this would invalidate the machine's warranty if it is still covered, and more generally would make you the owner of an illegal machine.

If possible, ask to see the console switched on so that you can finish reassuring yourself about the state of the machine, and test the disk drive and controllers.

If you're a retro gaming enthusiast, the condition of the console box is very important, as is the operation of the machine. Always ask to see it in working order.

Finally, so that you don't have to carry cash around with you if you're a buyer, or take the risk of a bad cheque, fake transfer or counterfeit money if you're a seller, use a secure payment solution like Obvy. If it's impossible to deliver in person, Obvy's delivery service ensures the security of the seller and the buyer and avoids any scams and the possibility of withdrawing from the transaction in the event of a problem.
