Advice and tips on buying and selling between private individuals

6 tips before buying a perfume from a private seller

Counterfeit perfumes are an increasingly common problem in the world of beauty and fashion. These perfumes are often sold as genuine versions of luxury brands at lower prices, which can be tempting for some people. However, it's important to understand that counterfeit perfumes are not just a matter of budget, but can also have a detrimental effect on product quality and safety. If you want to buy your perfume outside an official shop, here are a few tips for spotting and avoiding counterfeits.

Before you buy, go into a shop to see a product that is definitely an original. Take a good look at the finish of the packaging, the bottle, the labels... Even the cap is important! If you can, take a few photos of the packaging and the information on it, as well as of the bottle and cap. It's also important that the photos show the colour of the perfume. All these points are very important! Of course, you should also try it on, and why not leave with a small test strip so that you can keep the scent of the perfume with you when you meet the sales assistant.

Take a close look at the finish of the packaging, the finish of the bottle, the wording... Even the cap is important!

When you meet the person from whom you wish to buy the perfume, the important points to pay attention to are as follows:

1 - Perfume packaging

Pay close attention to the quality of the packaging, the colours, the labels and the small details. Also look carefully at the cellophane that protects the packaging: it must be perfectly stuck to the cardboard, with no flaws. If it's not, it's probably counterfeit.

2 - The bottle and cap

Perfumers pay a great deal of attention to the bottles and closures that showcase their fragrances. The finish must be simply impeccable, the materials of the highest quality, and the lettering perfectly affixed, symmetrical and flawless. Of course, if you've already had a look at the product in shop, you shouldn't be fooled!

3 - Information on packaging

Be sure to check the composition, syntax and spelling, the presence of the "Recyclable" logo on the box, the serial number... If anything looks fishy, don't go ahead with the purchase! Even the most sophisticated counterfeiters forget to mention certain things.

4 - The colour and scent of the perfume

If the product is no longer in its blister pack, you can check that the serial number on the box and on the bottle are identical. This will also allow you to see the colour of the perfume. Perfumes have a characteristic colour, which is quite pale if little or no colouring agents are used. If the colour is suspect and not identical to the one you've seen in the shop, it's probably an imitation.

As far as the scent is concerned, it's also essential to have tested the fragrance beforehand in shop, and why not carry the test strip with you. If the scent is different from what you remember, if it's less intense and doesn't last as long, don't bother.

5 - The price

Pay attention to the price at which the perfume bottle is sold. This is already a good indicator of its authenticity. If the price of a brand-name perfume seems too low compared with the usual market prices, there's a good chance that it's a counterfeit.

If the price of the perfume is low, it means that it has not been subjected to proper quality control. Brand-name perfumes are generally made with top-quality ingredients. They are also subject to rigorous quality controls, reflecting their high price.

6 - Payment must be secure
