Too Good To Go: the app that combines greed and anti-waste
Today we'd like to introduce you to Too Good To Go, a great start-up that lets you treat yourself at a low price while combating food waste. Treat yourself while doing a good deed? It's possible! Meet Camille, Deputy Managing Director.
Hello Camille, could you tell us a bit more about Too Good To Go?
It all started with a simple fact: a third of the food produced in the world is wasted. In France, this represents 10 million tonnes of food thrown away every year. Too Good To Go was created to enable everyone to do their bit to combat food waste.
In practical terms, Too Good To Go puts food retailers and users in touch with each other so that at the end of the day they can collect unsold food from nearby shops and save it from the bin.
It's a win-win solution: retailers can recycle products that would otherwise have been thrown away, and consumers can treat themselves at a low price by supporting local businesses. And together, we're fighting food waste!
Launched just 3 years ago, Too Good To Go is a huge success: 6 million meals have been saved since then!
Today, there are 60 enthusiastic 'waste warriors' in Paris and we are committed to fighting food waste on all fronts.
How is Too Good To Go part of a responsible consumption approach? Why did you choose to focus on this type of project?
Thanks to Too Good To Go, everyone can combat food waste in a very simple and practical way! The app also helps to rebuild links between local residents and their local shops. Our retail partners often tell us how they can interact with their customers in a different way, and this helps to open up a new dialogue.
At Too Good To Go, we're very sensitive to environmental issues, which is why we're fighting food waste. Harvesting, producing, processing, transporting and distributing products involves, among other things, the use of energy, water and chemicals: food therefore has a carbon footprint. One meal, for example, represents 2.5 kg of CO2.
Food waste is responsible for 8% of greenhouse gas emissions. If it were a country, it would be the 3rd biggest polluter after China and the United States.
What can your company do to help the world get better?
Saving food with Too Good To Go not only helps to reduce CO2 emissions, but we also aim to go even further in reducing food waste. For example, we published the first white paper on expiry dates, which account for 10% of food waste in Europe.
We're also working hard to raise awareness among our users and retail partners, to encourage them to adopt a more sustainable way of living and consuming. For example, we encourage them to reduce or even eliminate packaging by setting up a deposit system, and we offer lots of anti-waste tips on our blog.
More broadly, we want to educate the French about the link between food waste and climate change. In fact, we have launched a major campaign for Sustainable Development Week to raise awareness of the issue among Europeans.
At the same time, we doubled our environmental impact during this special week, planting a tree for every 100 meals saved.
In concrete terms, why should our readers use your service? What are the benefits for them?
Users can fight against food waste by enjoying a delicious meal at a low price! At the same time, they're supporting their local shopkeepers, who can give a second life to the tasty products they've lovingly made!
What's your news? Got a scoop to share?
We've just celebrated our 3rd birthday, and we're preparing lots of very, very nice things for an anti-gaspi back-to-school!
The last word?
We have to change what we can't accept, and we can all make a real commitment to combating the aberration that is food waste!
