Advice and tips on buying and selling between private individuals

10 tips for selling on Vinted

With the arrival of warmer weather, it's the perfect opportunity to sort through your wardrobe while earning some quick cash and doing something for the planet! Like the 1.4 million French users, you've chosen the Vinted platform to sell your clothes, and understandably so. This second-hand buying and selling platform has a wide choice of items and is easy to use. But there are a few tricks to emptying your dressing room more quickly, and in this article we're going to give you ten of them... so that you can sell on Vinted easily and like a pro!

1 - Look after your profile

To be taken seriously on Vinted, you need to look after your profile. Your profile is your identity card on Vinted, providing your contacts with more information about you. The information contained in your profile has a major influence on the decision of your potential buyers.

So start by adding a profile photo - it's reassuring. It's a proven fact that profiles without profile photos make fewer sales than those with photos. The photo doesn't necessarily have to be a photo of you, it could be a photo of your style of clothing, on which you'll "cut" your head, or even your pet. In my opinion, the best option is still to put a photo of yourself.

Secondly, make an effort to introduce yourself in a few words in the 'About me' section. Without going into all the details of your life, a presentation like "Hi, my name is Lucie and I'm a communications student. Welcome to my dressing room, which I update regularly" is more than enough. This will make the vinties want to chat with you, and why not, buy some items from you.

In this description, you can also indicate your terms of sale, delivery method, returns, etc. and even your measurements (size, shoe size, etc.). These are regularly requested, so mentioning them in your profile will save you having to enter them several times.

Finally, don't forget to check your account with Google or Facebook. These verifications considerably boost sales, as they are a guarantee of trust.

2 - Choose the garment you want to sell with care

Selling second-hand clothes does not mean selling clothes in poor condition. The garment in question may have faults such as a small hole, a missing button, a small stain that doesn't wash out... but it must remain clean and in good general condition! What's more, if the garment has a small defect, it's essential to mention it in the ad and show photos of the defect to avoid problems later on. So it's clearly not advisable to sell clothes and shoes that have seen their day and are badly damaged.

If you sell anything and everything on vinted, people will be disappointed and will leave you negative reviews. This will lead to a drop in your sales. Besides, a garment in poor condition doesn't attract anyone!

As you can see from this ad, these damaged and dirty trainers have had their day.

3 - Choose a relevant title

First of all, when you put an item up for sale, it's very important to choose the right category, but also the brand, the colours, and so on. This information makes it easier for users to find what they are looking for. However, this does not in any way prevent you from including the same details in the title and description of your advert.

Make sure you choose a relevant title; instead of saying "Nice bag", say "Adidas black shoulder bag". Always include the brand of your product and its size if it's a piece of clothing or a pair of shoes. Some buyers do searches without setting up filters, so you'll be sure to appear in their results.

One thing is certain: the more complete your advert is - title, category, description - the better your chances of appearing in the search results.

4 - Be transparent in your advert

Try to have as complete a description as possible. The more complete the description, the better your chances of finding a buyer. Include the composition of the item, the colour, the size (don't hesitate to mention whether it's a large or a small), the cut (slim fit, straight...), the condition, and why you're parting with it. Some even go so far as to suggest possible looks for their items.

All this information counts enormously in your future buyer's decision. It gives them the best possible idea of what to expect.

Be honest in your ads. Just as Vinted and its users accept the sale of items in very good condition, even new, they also accept the sale of damaged items (within reasonable limits). The only requirement is to point out the slightest apparent defect in the description of your ad and to attach photos of these defects so that interested manual users can get a better idea. In fact, some people are happy to buy items at a lower price in order to repair them themselves. It goes without saying that items in good condition sell better than those in poor condition.

A poor description that is neither complete nor honest will cost you bad reviews. And bad reviews mean no sale. There's no point in trying to hide flaws from platform users.

5 - Take care with the quality of your photos

On Vinted, it's essential that your photos are of good quality if you want to sell your clothes easily. With all the ads on one page, our eye is more easily drawn to pretty photos where the item is well highlighted. That's why it's so important to make the most of your chances with good photos. Here are a few tips for successful photos:

  • Take your photos during the day to benefit from good light so that colours and details are clearly visible.
  • Ideally, take a photo of the garment being worn, as it will stand out better than on a hanger. In fact, a garment worn sells 10 times faster than one displayed on a hanger or table.
  • If you're taking a photo of the garment you're wearing, make sure you look your best to inspire and inspire the vinties.
  • If you are displaying your clothes flat or on hangers, choose a light, uniform background such as a white table, a white wall, a white duvet cover...
  • Put up several photos of your article, from the front, the back and details.
  • Iron your clothes before taking photos. It sells better!

6 - Add #s to your ad description

To ensure that your ads appear in as many search results as possible and reach as many people as possible, it is essential to add hashtags at the end of your ad description.

To do this, choose hashtags that are relevant not only to your article but also to the searches most frequently used by vinties.

Examples for a dress: #robenoir #petiterobenoir #robedroite #robecourte #robechic

7 - Think carefully about the price

Don't forget that Vinted is all about buying and selling second-hand items. Most of them have already been worn, but not necessarily damaged, so there's no need to be too greedy about the price. As a general rule, we recommend that you set a price for your item that is at least 50% less than the original price (taking into account factors such as defects and other factors).

But if you go for attractive prices, you'll be able to get rid of your clothes more quickly! To make sure you're in the right price bracket, it may be worth looking at the prices of items similar to yours on the platform.

8 - Make sets of clothes

To clear out your dressing room more quickly, it can be a good idea to sell your clothes in lots. This is a tip that works very well on Vinted for getting rid of basic clothes of little value or children's clothes. The advantage of this solution is that you don't have to pack and send too many items, as everything is grouped together in a single advert.

To do this, put together a pack of 2, 3, 4 or 5 items of basic clothing such as winter jumpers, tops, etc. and publish them in a single advert at an attractive price!

9 - Be responsive and pleasant

On Vinted, to make sales, you have to be reactive. There are a huge number of sellers and a huge number of sales for the same items. So not only do you have to offer an attractive price, but you also have to respond quickly to the various requests from potential buyers.

Users who are not responsive on Vinted will obviously make fewer sales on the platform.

Vinted already does this, but don't hesitate to inform your buyer at every stage of the transaction, letting them know when you will be sending the parcel, when the parcel has been sent, etc.

So once the parcel has been sent, you can get back to the buyer to make sure they have received it and are happy with it.

Of course, remain courteous throughout your exchanges. Cool exchanges bring you positive opinions, and vice versa.

10 - Follow up with people interested in your articles

If you see that a vintie has put one of your items in her favourites, take the initiative by offering her a discount of between €1 and €5 in a private message. Also let them know in the message that you're available for further information. The person will appreciate your gesture and it will often lead to a discussion and then to a purchase.
