Pagachey: anti-food-waste classified ads
After covering the highly problematic subject of food waste with Phenix and Save Eat, we interviewed Laurent Coste, founder of Pagachey, a new initiative fighting this veritable scourge. His approach is different, involving absolutely everyone through his classified ads platform, which enables Internet users to give away rather than throw away what's lying around in a corner or in a kitchen, but which is still edible.
1 - Hello and welcome! Can you tell us more about Pagachey?
Pagachey was launched in 2017. Truly functional thanks to an online platform since the end of 2018, Pagachey is now gradually making a name for itself throughout France.
The principle is simple: to offer each user, whether an individual, a member of an association or club, or a shopkeeper, the opportunity to offer food products that they have but won't eat or sell.
Whether it's in your cupboards or fridge, and whether it's for well-preserved products, surplus stock or unsold items.
Anything that's healthy and consumable can be offered on Pagachey, thanks to a very simple classified ad system.
2 - How is your company involved in responsible consumption? Why did you choose to focus on this type of project?
Pagachey's anti-gaspi approach offers residents the chance to avoid wasting what is destined to go to waste.
The French are increasingly concerned about what they do for the environment. So offering them a solution so that they don't lose what they can't consume seems like a no-brainer.
Associations or food recovery methods are not always physically close to residents, or they may not be familiar with the procedure to be followed.
Pagachey suggests that he simply post a product online so that someone around him can contact him if they are interested in picking it up.
The figures on waste speak for themselves, but Pagachey is simply looking for a common-sense solution, without pointing the finger at anyone.
Pagachey is simply a downstream solution to the distribution chain, helping to prevent food waste.
3 - What can your company do to help the world get better?
By reducing food waste, Pagachey is making a long-term contribution to ensuring that everyone buys more accurately according to their needs, to avoid wastage.
By reducing waste, considerable CO2 emissions are reduced, on a national scale. The local authorities are particularly interested in this service, as it reduces the amount of waste they have to deal with, and saves them money in the process.
Encouraging social interaction, the service enables neighbours or people who frequently bump into each other to get to know each other through this "Pagachey" occasion.
The platform is completely free, and simply puts users in touch with each other. As such, no payment is required to pick up a product on offer. The exchange is hand-to-hand, once the terms of the meeting have been defined by both parties.
A food product can be donated, just as it can be offered at a low price: Pagachey is first and foremost a platform for solidarity, not a means of doing business.
It is in this spirit that Pagachey continues to grow.
4 - What news do you have? Any scoops to share?
Pagachey is expanding throughout France, and will soon be at the heart of zero-waste operations in the Île-de-France region, particularly in the Hauts-de-Seine department. Any local authority can do the same by including Pagachey in its programme.
The last word?
Don't hesitate to share an invitation to Pagachey with your friends and family! Spread the word, the service reaches everyone! And follow us on the web 😊
